Moderate Risk 2 / 5

The Alohilani Resort sits at the eastern end of Waikiki Beach, near Kuhio Beach Park and the iconic Kapahulu Groin. This is actually one of the better-positioned hotels in Waikiki from a water quality perspective — the eastern end is farther from the Ala Wai Canal's outlet than the western hotels.

Like all Waikiki hotels, the Alohilani faces the same fundamental water quality challenge: the Ala Wai Canal drains Honolulu's urban watershed. When it rains, bacteria and pollutants from the canal spread along the Waikiki shoreline. On dry days, the eastern section near the Alohilani typically shows the best water quality along the entire Waikiki strip.

The hotel fronts Kuhio Beach Park, which is staffed by lifeguards and has the Kapahulu Groin protecting a section of calmer water. This is a practical advantage for families with children.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii DOH recommends at least 72 hours out of the water after heavy rain at all Waikiki hotels, including the Alohilani. The Ala Wai Canal and storm drains can spread bacteria throughout the Waikiki shoreline after storms.
