Beaches Near Andaz Maui

Andaz Maui at Wailea — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Andaz Maui at Wailea. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Maui advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About the Wailea Resort Area

The Andaz Maui at Wailea occupies a prime position along South Maui's gold coast, a stretch of five crescent beaches connected by a paved beachfront walking path. Wailea is the drier, sunnier side of the island, sitting in the rain shadow of Haleakalā, which means cloud-free beach days are the norm rather than the exception.

The Wailea coast is built on ancient lava flows that created natural rocky points separating each beach into its own cove. This geography keeps the water quality among the best on Maui — there are no major streams emptying onto the Wailea shoreline, so bacteria levels remain consistently low. The resort area is well-maintained, with showers, restrooms, and public access paths at each beach.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Mokapu Beach Low ●
A compact, beautiful crescent of golden sand that sits directly below the Andaz property, shared with the neighboring Wailea Beach Resort. The water is typically calm and clear, with a gentle sandy bottom that drops off gradually. Morning hours tend to offer the best conditions before trade winds pick up in the afternoon

Wailea Beach Low ●
The signature beach of the Wailea resort area, a wide crescent of soft sand flanked by the Grand Wailea and Four Seasons resorts. Water quality here is consistently excellent with some of the lowest bacteria counts on Maui. The sandy bottom extends far offshore, and the beach is wide enough to absorb resort crowds comfortably
5 min walk
North
Ulua Beach Low ●
A sheltered cove that shares a small point with Wailea Beach, creating a rocky reef area that draws snorkelers before the wind picks up around midday. Green sea turtles are regularly spotted here grazing on algae, and the coral coverage is among the healthiest on Maui's south shore. Early morning arrives bring the clearest visibility
5 min walk
North
Polo Beach Low ●
The southernmost of the main Wailea resort beaches, fronting the Fairmont Kea Lani. Because it requires walking past the other resort beaches or driving to the Fairmont, it sees noticeably fewer visitors. The sand is soft, the water is calm, and the overall atmosphere is more peaceful than Wailea Beach to the north
5 min walk
South
The largest beach on Maui — a third of a mile of untouched golden sand backed by a lava rock hill. The shore break here is powerful and has caused more spinal injuries than almost any beach in the state, so experienced ocean swimmers should exercise caution and everyone else should respect the warning signs. No facilities or lifeguards are present

Getting Around

The five main Wailea beaches are all connected by the Wailea Beach Path, a 1.5-mile paved walkway that makes it easy to stroll from beach to beach without a car. Mokapu and Wailea Beach are steps from the Andaz. Ulua Beach is a five-minute walk north. Polo Beach is a five-minute walk south. For Makena (Big Beach), drive south on Wailea Alanui Road and Makena Road for about 10 minutes — parking fills early on weekends.

Best water quality: Wailea Beach (no stream influence, consistently low bacteria). Best for snorkeling: Ulua Beach (reef, turtles, calm morning conditions). Most peaceful: Polo Beach (fewer crowds). Most dramatic scenery: Makena Big Beach (massive sand, powerful waves).

If Brown Water Is Active

After heavy rain, bacteria levels spike at beaches near streams and river mouths. If a brown water advisory is active near Andaz Maui at Wailea:

  • Wait 72 hours after rain stops before entering the water
  • Avoid brown or murky water regardless of whether an advisory is posted
  • Best rain-resistant option: Wailea Beach (North) — generally clearer after rain due to geography
  • Check the Maui live advisories page for current conditions
