Four Seasons Resort Maui, Wailea — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea occupies a prime position along the south shore's gold coast, directly on Wailea Beach with views stretching across the channel to Kahoʻolawe and Molokini crater. The resort is surrounded by the other major Wailea properties, but its beachfront position is widely considered the best of the group.
Wailea sits in the rain shadow of Haleakalā, so sunny weather is nearly guaranteed year-round. The five crescent beaches along this coast are connected by a paved walking path, and the absence of major stream outlets means water quality is consistently among the best on Maui. The rocky lava points between beaches create good reef habitat, making Wailea one of Maui's top snorkeling areas alongside Kaʻānapali.
From the Four Seasons, the Wailea Beach Path connects all five Wailea beaches on foot. Polo Beach is about 10 minutes south walking. Ulua Beach is 5 minutes north. Kamaole III is about 15 minutes north. For Makena Big Beach, drive south on Wailea Alanui and Makena Road, about 10 minutes — the parking lot fills early on weekends. The path is paved and flat, making beach-hopping between Wailea's coves effortless.
Most convenient: Wailea Beach (at the hotel, excellent water quality). Best snorkeling: Ulua Beach (reef, turtles, morning conditions). Most peaceful: Polo Beach (fewer crowds, same quality). Best for kids: Kamaole III (lifeguards, playground, calm water).
