Grand Wailea, Wailea, Maui — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
The Grand Wailea is one of Maui's most iconic luxury resorts, situated directly on Wailea Beach along the island's sunny south shore. The resort is known for its elaborate pool system, sculpture garden, and beachfront position that provides direct access to what many consider the best swimming beach in the Wailea resort corridor.
Wailea's five crescent beaches are connected by a paved coastal path, and the Grand Wailea sits roughly in the center. The south shore lies in the rain shadow of Haleakalā, so dry, sunny weather is the norm. Water quality along this coast is consistently excellent because there are no significant streams emptying onto the Wailea shoreline, and the lava rock headlands separating each beach create good circulation patterns.
From the Grand Wailea, the entire Wailea beach coast is walkable via the 1.5-mile paved Wailea Beach Path. Wailea Beach is right at the resort. Ulua Beach is a five-minute walk north. Polo Beach is about 10 minutes south. Kamaole III is a 10-minute walk north beyond Ulua. For Makena (Big Beach), drive south on Wailea Alanui and Makena Road, about 10 minutes — parking fills quickly on weekends.
Most convenient: Wailea Beach (at the hotel, excellent water quality). Best snorkeling: Ulua Beach (reef, turtles, calm mornings). Most peaceful: Polo Beach (fewer crowds). Best for kids: Kamaole III (playground, calm water, lifeguards).
