Beaches Near Grand Wailea

Grand Wailea, Wailea, Maui — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Grand Wailea, Wailea, Maui. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Maui advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About the Grand Wailea Resort

The Grand Wailea is one of Maui's most iconic luxury resorts, situated directly on Wailea Beach along the island's sunny south shore. The resort is known for its elaborate pool system, sculpture garden, and beachfront position that provides direct access to what many consider the best swimming beach in the Wailea resort corridor.

Wailea's five crescent beaches are connected by a paved coastal path, and the Grand Wailea sits roughly in the center. The south shore lies in the rain shadow of Haleakalā, so dry, sunny weather is the norm. Water quality along this coast is consistently excellent because there are no significant streams emptying onto the Wailea shoreline, and the lava rock headlands separating each beach create good circulation patterns.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Wailea Beach Low ●
The wide, gently sloping beach directly fronting the Grand Wailea, with soft golden sand and consistently calm, clear water. The beach is shared with neighboring resorts but is wide enough to absorb the crowds. Early morning offers the best conditions for swimming and snorkeling before trade winds pick up in the afternoon. Water quality here is among the best on Maui

At the resort
Ulua Beach Low ●
A sheltered cove just north of Wailea Beach where a rocky reef point creates excellent snorkeling habitat. Green sea turtles are regulars here, grazing on algae along the reef edge. Visibility is typically best in the early morning, and the reef shares a point with the adjacent Mokapu Beach, giving snorkelers two areas to explore on a single outing

North on beach path
Polo Beach Low ●
The southernmost of the major Wailea resort beaches, fronting the Fairmont Kea Lani. The extra walking distance from the main resort cluster keeps visitor numbers noticeably lower, and the sand quality and water conditions are just as good as Wailea Beach. Snorkeling along the rocky edges on either side of the cove reveals healthy reef fish populations
5 min walk
South
The biggest beach on Maui — a third of a mile of pristine golden sand with no development behind it, backed by a cinder hill called Puʻu Olaʻi. The shore break is exceptionally powerful and is responsible for more spinal injuries than nearly any other beach in Hawaii. Visitors should exercise extreme caution near the waterline, especially on south swell days
15 min
South
Kamaole III Low ●
A public beach park at the northern edge of the Wailea resort area with a playground, grassy lawn, and picnic pavilions that give it a more relaxed, local feel than the resort beaches. The swimming area is calm and family-friendly, and the park provides a good counterpoint to the manicured resort experience. Parking and restrooms are available at the park

Getting Around

From the Grand Wailea, the entire Wailea beach coast is walkable via the 1.5-mile paved Wailea Beach Path. Wailea Beach is right at the resort. Ulua Beach is a five-minute walk north. For Makena (Big Beach), drive south on Wailea Alanui and Makena Road, about 10 minutes — parking fills quickly on weekends.
