Garden of Eden, Road to Hana — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
The Garden of Eden Arboretum and Botanical Garden sits at mile marker 10 on the Road to Hana, a 26-acre property featuring curated tropical plants, sweeping ocean views, and one of the best vantage points for Puohokamoa Falls. The garden is one of the most popular stops on the Hana Highway and provides a manicured counterpoint to the wild rainforest along the rest of the route.
Since the garden is an inland attraction along a winding coastal road, the nearest beaches are either back toward Paʻia (west) or further along the Hana Highway to the east. This part of Maui's windward coast is rugged and rainforest-covered, with rocky shoreline, stream mouths, and only occasional sandy beach pockets. Water quality on this coast is heavily influenced by rainfall, and most beach access requires careful navigation of unmarked trails.
From the Garden of Eden, Hoʻokipa Beach and Paʻia are about 15 to 20 minutes back west on the Hana Highway. For the black sand beaches and Hamoa Beach, continue east on the highway toward Hana — the full drive from the garden to Hana takes roughly 2 hours with stops. The road is narrow and winding with one-lane bridges, so patience is required. Most visitors combine the garden stop with a full-day Hana drive rather than backtracking for beaches.
Closest option: Hoʻokipa Beach (20 minutes back west, world-class wind sports). Best for photography: Black sand beaches along the highway (not for swimming). Most beautiful: Hamoa Beach (continue to Hana, powerful surf). Planning note: Combine the garden visit with a full-day Hana drive for the best beach options.
