Beaches Near Wailea

Wailea, Maui — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Wailea, Maui. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Maui advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About Wailea

Wailea is an upscale resort area on Maui's dry, sunny south shore, home to the Grand Wailea, Four Seasons, Fairmont Kea Lani, and other luxury properties. The entire area was master-planned around a series of crescent beaches connected by the paved Wailea Beach Path, making it one of the best spots on Maui for beach-hopping on foot.

The south shore gets significantly less rain than the north side of the island, so beach conditions are reliable almost year-round. Water quality here is consistently among the best on Maui, with low bacteria counts and good water clarity.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Wailea Beach Low ●
The flagship beach of the resort area with a gentle sandy slope into calm, clear water. Historically strong water quality. Connected to Polo Beach and Ulua Beach via the Wailea Beach Path. Early morning is best for snorkeling before the wind picks up.
In town
Central Wailea
Polo Beach Low ●
A smaller, less crowded alternative to Wailea Beach just south along the path. Fronted by the Fairmont Kea Lani. Sandy bottom with a rocky point at one end that offers decent snorkeling. Fewer people here even on busy days.
5 min
South Wailea
One of Maui's largest undeveloped beaches — a vast, golden crescent with no resort buildings in sight. Strong shore break makes it popular with bodysurfers but dangerous for wading. Arrive early for parking on weekends.
10 min
South
Kamaole III Low ●
The largest of the three Kamaole Beach parks in Kihei, with a grassy lawn, playground, and gentle waves. More of a local family vibe than the Wailea resort beaches. Good facilities and easy parking.
10 min
North
Ulua Beach Low ●
A pair of beaches (Ulua and Mokapu) sharing one access point, known for calm morning snorkeling over a rocky reef. The reef here has more coral and fish than the sandy Wailea Beach further south. Public parking lot with showers.

Getting Around

The Wailea Beach Path is the best way to move between beaches on foot — a paved 1.5-mile walkway connecting Ulua Beach in the north to Polo Beach in the south, passing directly through Wailea Beach. For Makena and Kamaole III, you will need to drive. All beaches have public access and free parking, though lots can fill by mid-morning.

Best for calm swimming: Wailea Beach. Best for snorkeling: Ulua Beach (morning). Best for a wild beach: Makena Big Beach (powerful shore break). Best for families: Kamaole III (playground, gentle waves).
