Dukeʻs Beach

The western section of Waikiki near the Hilton Hawaiian Village

About This Beach
Location & Naming

Dukeʻs Beach refers to the Kahanamoku Beach area at the western end of Waikiki, named after Duke Kahanamoku, the father of modern surfing. It fronts the Hilton Hawaiian Village and includes the Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon. Visitors often call it Dukeʻs Beach or Kahanamoku Beach interchangeably.

Water Quality Considerations

This section is the closest to the Ala Wai Canal outfall, which is the primary source of bacteria-carrying runoff in the Waikiki area. After any rainfall, this beach tends to see elevated bacteria levels before other Waikiki sections. The Kahanamoku Lagoon has limited water circulation.

The Lagoon

The man-made Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon provides calm, sheltered water popular with families and small children. However, the enclosed design limits natural flushing. When advisories are posted for Waikiki, the lagoon can retain contamination longer than the open ocean beach.
