Water quality status and bacteria risk rating
📍 Port Allen, Kauaʻi South Shore
Glass Beach has a moderate bacteria risk due to its location near the Port Allen industrial and commercial harbor area. The proximity to port operations and potential runoff from nearby activities raise water quality concerns. The beach was historically a dump site, which is the origin of the famous sea glass.
Glass Beach is primarily a beachcombing destination, not a swimming beach. The water conditions are generally not ideal for swimming — the bottom is rocky, visibility can be poor, and the industrial port setting does not inspire confidence in water quality. If you visit, enjoy the sea glass hunting but consider swimming at nearby Poipu or Salt Pond Beach instead.
Based on: Proximity to Port Allen harbor, industrial runoff potential, historical dump site, limited DOH monitoring
The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. The industrial port area near Glass Beach means runoff can carry additional contaminants beyond typical bacteria. Always check the water visually before entering.
