Hanakapiʻai Beach

Water quality status and bacteria risk rating

📍 Napali Coast, Kauaʻi — Kalalau Trail Mile 2

EXTREME DANGER — DO NOT SWIM
Hanakapiʻai Beach has extremely dangerous currents that have caused multiple drownings. There are no lifeguards, no cell phone service, and rescue is extremely difficult. Powerful rip currents can sweep swimmers out to sea even on calm-looking days. Swimming is strongly discouraged at all times.
Checking live advisories…
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

Historical Bacteria Risk
⚠ Historical rating — this is based on long-term testing data, not current conditions. The state of Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories. Always check the water yourself and avoid brown or murky water.
Low Bacteria Risk 1 / 5

Hanakapiʻai Beach has low bacteria risk due to its extremely remote location far from any development or sewage infrastructure. The beach is only accessible via a 2-mile hike on the Kalalau Trail.

However, the real danger here is not bacteria — it is the ocean itself. Hanakapiʻai faces the open North Pacific with no reef protection. Powerful rip currents, sudden large waves, and strong shore break have caused multiple drownings. There are no lifeguards and no cell service. The stream mouth can carry bacteria after rain, but this is a minor concern compared to the lethal currents. Swimming is strongly discouraged regardless of water quality.

Based on: Remote location, no development, stream mouth input, open ocean exposure, documented drowning history

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. The stream at Hanakapiʻai can carry bacteria after rain. But again — the primary danger here is the deadly currents, not bacteria. Do not swim at this beach.
