Hawaii Beach Equipment
Rentals Guide

Where to rent snorkel gear, kayaks, paddleboards, and boogie boards on each island — plus water quality tips before you get in the water.

Check Water Quality Before You Rent
Always check the DOH Clean Water Branch for active advisories before renting beach equipment. If the water is under advisory or appears brown, postpone your rental and ocean activity.
Rental Gear Types & Pricing
Snorkel Set (Mask, Snorkel, Fins)
$10–$25/day

The most popular rental in Hawaii. Basic sets include mask, snorkel, and fins. Upgrade options include prescription masks, dry-top snorkels (prevent flooding), and full-foot vs. open-heel fins. Multi-day rates are significantly cheaper. Snorkel Bob's (Oʻahu and Maui) allows inter-island returns — pick up on one island, return on another. Always rinse before use.

Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP)
$25–$60/hour

SUP boards are available at most major beaches. Inflatable boards (easier to transport) are common rentals. Hard boards are faster and more stable. Half-day and full-day rates reduce hourly cost significantly. Many shops include a lesson with your first rental. Best rented at calm bays: Kailua, Ko Olina, Kaʻanapali mornings, Hanalei.

Kayak
$20–$55/hour

Single and double kayaks available at most major beach areas. Kailua Beach Adventures (Oʻahu) is the most popular for Mokulua Island kayaking. Most shops require a brief orientation for first-timers. Half-day and full-day rates available. Life vests are typically included.

Boogie Board (Bodyboard)
$8–$15/day

Available at most Oʻahu and Maui beach shops near popular shorebreak beaches. Best at beaches with consistent small-to-medium waves. Not appropriate at beaches with heavy shorebreak (Sandy Beach, Makapuʻu) unless you're experienced. Some shops also rent fins separately for bodysurfing.

Surfboard
$15–$40/hour

Foam longboards (soft tops) are the standard beginner rental. Hard boards for intermediates. Waikiki has the highest density of surf rentals — dozens of beach boys and shops operate on the beach. Haleiwa and Kailua also have surf shops. Most beginner board rentals include an instructor for the first session.

Tips for Renting Beach Equipment in Hawaii
  • Book multi-day snorkel gear in advance — it's 40–60% cheaper than daily rates
  • Snorkel Bob's allows inter-island gear return — convenient for multi-island trips
  • Resort beach huts are convenient but more expensive than nearby shops
  • Always check water quality before renting — wasted rental money is worse than a postponed trip
  • Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen — many rental shops sell it but at high prices
  • Rash guards are often rentable with snorkel gear; they eliminate sunscreen use in the water entirely
