Off the Tourist Trail
Mahaulepu Beach, Larsen Beach, Donkey Beach (Paliku), Polihale Beach, and Anahola Beach are less visited by tourists. Each requires either a hike, dirt road access, or is simply off the main tourist circuit.
Polihale Beach requires driving several miles on a dirt road that can be rough and occasionally impassable after rain. 4WD is recommended. The remote 17-mile beach is stunning and offers dramatic Na Pali Coast views.
Anahola Beach and Donkey Beach have relatively gentle conditions on calm days. Mahaulepu has rocky areas but some sandy swimming spots. Polihale has strong currents and is not recommended for casual swimming.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Bacteria and pollutants from runoff can linger in the water longer than the brown color does.
