Mahaulepu Beach, Larsen Beach, Donkey Beach (Paliku), Polihale Beach, and Anahola Beach are less visited by tourists. Each requires either a hike, dirt road access, or is simply off the main tourist circuit.
Polihale Beach requires driving several miles on a dirt road that can be rough and occasionally impassable after rain. 4WD is recommended. The remote 17-mile beach is stunning and offers dramatic Na Pali Coast views.
Check current Hawaii DOH advisories for KauaŹ»i, posted beach signs, recent rain, visible water, and ocean conditions. Historical descriptions of Anahola or other beaches cannot establish that swimming is safe today.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Bacteria and pollutants from runoff can linger in the water longer than the brown color does.

DOH only monitors a fraction of Hawaii’s beaches, and some areas have no regular testing at all.
