Water quality status and bacteria risk rating
📍 Westernmost tip of Oʻahu — Wildlife Sanctuary
Kaʻena Point has low bacteria risk due to its extremely remote location with zero nearby development or sewage infrastructure. The area is a Natural Area Reserve and wildlife sanctuary. There are no streams or runoff sources feeding into the ocean here.
However, the ocean here is extremely dangerous. Converging currents from the North Shore and West Side create powerful, unpredictable conditions. Large waves can surge over rocky shorelines without warning. There is no sandy beach. Multiple people have been swept off the rocks at Kaʻena Point. Do not enter the water. Enjoy the wildlife and scenery from a safe distance.
Based on: Extremely remote location, no development, no stream inputs, converging ocean currents
The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. While Kaʻena Point has virtually no runoff sources, the ocean conditions here are dangerous regardless of water quality. Do not swim at this location.
