Checking live advisories…
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Even clear-looking bays can harbor elevated bacteria after rain. Never enter when the water looks murky or discolored. Wait at least 72 hours after heavy rain before swimming.

Historical Bacteria Risk
⚠ Historical rating — based on long-term testing data, not current conditions. Always check for brown or murky water before entering.
Low Risk 1 / 5

Kapalua Bay sits in a naturally sheltered cove on Maui's northwest coast, away from major development and stream runoff sources. The surrounding land is largely resort property with modern drainage management. DOH testing history at Kapalua Bay has consistently shown very good water quality.

The bay's sheltered geometry also means less mixing after rain events — water quality can be temporarily affected if heavy rain falls directly into the bay catchment. However, this is uncommon and typically resolves within 48–72 hours. West Maui generally receives less rain than the island's windward side.

Based on: DOH monitoring history, low development density, west Maui rain shadow, sheltered bay geometry

Snorkeling & Marine Life

What You'll Find Underwater

Kapalua Bay's two rocky headlands shelter the cove and create outstanding snorkeling habitat. Both sides of the bay have healthy coral formations with colorful reef fish — expect surgeonfish, triggerfish, Moorish idols, parrotfish, and wrasse. The left (south) point tends to have denser coral and more marine life.

Hōnu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) are almost always present. They graze along the rocky edges and often rest on the sandy floor. Spinner dolphins occasionally pass through the bay in early morning. Octopus can sometimes be spotted hiding in rocky crevices.

Entry and exit: There's a sandy beach entry in the center. Rocky entries at both points offer quicker access to the reefs but require water shoes or fins. The sandy bottom slopes gently, making this beginner-friendly.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Kapalua Bay has lower rain exposure than east Maui, but Kona storms and strong tradewind events can bring temporary rainfall. Always verify conditions visually.
