Water quality, snorkeling, and beach conditions compared
For water quality and snorkeling: Kapalua Bay wins. The small sheltered bay has lower bacteria risk, no stream discharge, and excellent coral reef snorkeling. Best choice for snorkelers and visitors who prioritize water quality over amenities.
For families and convenience: Kaʻanapali wins. The long resort beach has more hotel options, restaurants, activities, and family-friendly amenities. Black Rock at the north end is one of Maui's best snorkel spots. Central Kaʻanapali is great for families with gentle waves.
After rain: Both beaches should follow the 72-hour rule. Kaʻanapali's north end near Honokowai Stream is higher risk; avoid that section. Kapalua Bay recovers faster.
