Keawaula Beach

The Hawaiian name for Yokohama Bay — Oʻahuʻs western tip

About This Beach
The Two Names

Keawaula is the traditional Hawaiian name, meaning "the red harbor." Yokohama Bay is the English name, said to come from Japanese fishermen who frequented the area. Both names refer to the same beach at the very end of Farrington Highway on Oʻahuʻs leeward coast.

Water Quality & Remoteness

Yokohama Bay is one of the most remote accessible beaches on Oʻahu. There is no development, no storm drains, and no streams emptying into the water nearby. This means water quality is typically less affected by the runoff issues that plague urban beaches. However, DOH does not regularly test this beach.

Conditions & Access

The beach faces west and can receive large surf in winter. Strong currents are common. There is no lifeguard. The leeward location means very little rainfall, keeping water quality generally favorable. Drive to the end of Farrington Highway; the road literally ends at the beach.
