Water quality status and swim safety — near Hana
📍 Haneoo Road · Near Hamoa Beach · Kauiki Head backdrop
Koʻki Beach is located just outside Hana town on the Haneoo Road loop, distinguished by the dramatic red cinder hill of Kauiki Head at its western end. The beach has good water quality overall — the Hana area has virtually no industrial development or sewage infrastructure that would pose a pollution risk.
The main water quality concern is stream and waterfall runoff after rain. Hana is one of the wettest areas in Hawaii, and storm events can flush bacteria from the surrounding jungle into nearshore waters. After heavy rain, wait 72 hours before swimming anywhere in the Hana area.
The physical hazards at Koʻki are more significant than the water quality risk. Rip currents are common, especially on the east side of the beach near the point. This beach is not suitable for children or non-confident swimmers without calm conditions.
Based on: East Maui / Hana area limited DOH data, no known pollution sources, open ocean exposure
The Hawaii DOH recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Hana receives extremely high rainfall; streams and waterfalls can discharge significantly after storms.
