Water quality at nearby Poipu Beach
Koloa Landing Resort is a pool-focused resort near Poipu Beach on Kauaʻi’s south shore. While the resort itself is known for its impressive pool complex, the nearest ocean swimming is at Poipu Beach, a short walk away.
Poipu Beach generally tests well for bacteria. The south shore is the driest part of Kauaʻi, which means less runoff and better water quality than the wetter north and east sides. There was a brief bacteria exceedance in February 2026, but it cleared immediately on retesting.
Compare this to Hanalei Bay (4/5 risk) on the north shore or Kalapaki Beach (5/5 risk) on the east side. The south shore is significantly cleaner.
Based on: DOH monitoring at Poipu Beach, south shore dry climate, ocean circulation patterns
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Bacteria and pollutants from runoff can linger in the water longer than the brown color does.
When conditions are clear, Kauaʻi’s south shore has incredible ocean activities. Check the water quality above, then book with confidence.
