Kūʻau Cove (Mama's Beach)

Kūʻau Cove — also called Mama's Beach — is the small, reef-protected pocket behind the famous Mama's Fish House restaurant. Kūʻau Cove is a small pocket beach behind a fringing reef on Maui's North Shore. The cove is beside Mama's Fish House, with dunes and nearby development above the shoreline.

Runoff and water exchange can vary with weather. The cove's sheltered appearance does not establish bacteria levels; check the dated community sample and current DOH advisories separately.

The Hawaii Department of Health does NOT routinely test Kūʻau Cove (Mama's Beach). The community-tested readings on this page come from the Surfrider Foundation Blue Water Task Force, a volunteer-led monitoring program run by the Surfrider Maui chapter.

Sandy entry from the central beach. The reef pool is shallow at low tide. Watch your footing on the rock margins. Calm enough for kids on most days; strong shorebreak only during major north swells.

Year-round in calm conditions. The cove is small — best for families, less suitable for big crowds. Mama's Fish House on the bluff is a destination in its own right; the beach is open to the public independent of the restaurant.

Behind Mama's Fish House on Hāna Highway in Kūʻau, about 1.5 miles east of Pāʻia town. Very limited roadside parking (Mama's lot is for restaurant patrons only). Can also walk in from H.A. Baldwin Beach via the dune path.
