Water quality status and bacteria risk rating
📍 North Shore Oʻahu, Haleʻiwa — “Turtle Beach”
Laniakea Beach has excellent water quality with no direct stream input. The beach sits on the open North Shore coastline with strong ocean flushing. There are no significant runoff sources, and the rocky/sandy bottom stays relatively clean under normal conditions.
Laniakea is world-famous as “Turtle Beach” — one of the most reliable spots in Hawaiʻi to see Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) basking on the sand. The beach is more popular for turtle watching than swimming. During winter months, large North Shore surf makes swimming dangerous.
Based on: Open ocean exposure, no direct stream runoff, good natural flushing
The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Laniakea Beach has no major stream input, but roadside runoff from Kamehameha Highway can affect water quality near the parking area after storms. Always check the water visually before entering.

Safe to Swim Hawaii is an independent passion project — it is not affiliated with the Hawaii Department of Health or any government agency. Water quality ratings on this site are estimates based on publicly available testing data and geographic analysis. They are not real-time measurements and may not reflect current conditions. “No DOH Alerts” means no advisory is currently posted — it does not mean the water was tested and found safe. DOH only monitors a fraction of Hawaii’s beaches, and some areas have no regular testing at all.
