Trip Plan
Overview
Kauaʻi's luxury experience is the most nature-integrated of any Hawaiian island: five-star resorts sit against the dramatic backdrop of mountain ridges, canyon cliffs, and the Nā Pali Coast. The South Shore's Grand Hyatt and Koloa Landing, and the North Shore's 1 Hotel Hanalei (formerly St. Regis Princeville), anchor the premium accommodation. This itinerary pairs resort beach access with private Nā Pali Coast experiences and spa treatments surrounded by tropical gardens.
Advance reservations: Nā Pali Coast boat charter or helicopter tour (2+ weeks ahead). South Shore and North Shore resort dinner reservations (2 weeks). Spa treatments (1 week). Hāʻena State Park parking reservation for Keʻe Beach access.
Day 1 — South Shore: Grand Hyatt & Poʻipū Luxury
8:30 AM
Poʻipū Beach — Begin at Kauaʻi's sunniest coast. The calm western side of Poʻipū Beach Park offers gentle water and monk seal sightings. Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi guests have direct access to Shipwreck Beach (more dramatic scenery but rougher water). Koloa Landing guests are a 5-minute walk from Poʻipū Beach Park.
Check water quality; the South Shore typically has excellent conditions.
Parking: Free at Poʻipū Beach Park or valet at your resort. Resort guests have direct beach access.
11:00 AM
Book a spa treatment at the Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi Anara Spa (25,000 sq ft, lava rock grottos and tropical garden setting) or the Koloa Landing spa. Hawaiian lomi lomi massage ($250-350/90 min) and outdoor garden treatments define the Kauaʻi spa experience. The Grand Hyatt's open-air lava-rock shower garden is unique in Hawaiʻi.
Afternoon
Book a private guided kayak and snorkel tour of the South Shore reefs ($150-250/person, 3 hours). Local operators take you to sites inaccessible from shore, with sea turtles, monk seals, and coral gardens. Afterward, watch sunset from the Grand Hyatt's clifftop terrace or the Mahaʻulepu coastal trail. Dinner at one of Poʻipū's fine-dining restaurants.
IF BROWN WATER IS ACTIVE
The South Shore is rarely affected. If conditions are poor, extend the spa day (full-day packages available) and walk the Mahaʻulepu Trail for dramatic coastal scenery without entering the water.
Day 2 — Nā Pali Coast: The Signature Experience
7:00 AM
Book a premium Nā Pali Coast catamaran tour from Port Allen ($200-350/person for luxury operators with smaller groups, gourmet lunch, and open bar). The 4-5 hour trip motors along the base of the 4,000-foot sea cliffs, entering sea caves, passing cascading waterfalls, and stopping at pristine offshore snorkel sites. Spinner dolphins are frequently encountered. This is the signature Kauaʻi luxury experience and arguably the most dramatic coastal scenery in the Pacific.
Midday
After the boat tour, drive 20 minutes up Waimea Canyon Drive to the lookouts for a different perspective on the island's geological drama. The canyon glows in afternoon light with red and green walls and, after rain, dozens of temporary waterfalls.
Evening
Return to your resort for evening cocktails and dinner. If staying at Princeville on the North Shore, the 1 Hotel Hanalei has a clifftop bar with views over Hanalei Bay and the Nā Pali Coast that make even a premium cocktail feel underpriced.
IF BROWN WATER IS ACTIVE
Nā Pali Coast tours are primarily about the cliff scenery, which is unaffected by rain (waterfalls are actually more dramatic). If the boat cancels due to rough seas, book a doors-off helicopter tour ($300-500/person, 50-60 min) for the aerial perspective of the cliffs and inland waterfalls.
Day 3 — North Shore & Farewell
8:00 AM
Hanalei Bay — Spend the morning at this mountain-backed crescent bay. In summer, rent a premium stand-up paddleboard or outrigger canoe for a gentle paddle along the bay (rentals $40-80/hour). The view of the mountains rising 4,000 feet behind the beach is otherworldly.
Check water quality.
Parking: Free at Hanalei Beach Park. Princeville resort guests can arrange shuttle service.
11:00 AM
Anini Beach — Drive 10 minutes east for a final morning snorkel in the calm, reef-protected lagoon. The shallow water and gentle conditions provide a relaxed close to the trip.
Check water quality.
Parking: Free at Anini Beach Park.
Afternoon
Drive to Princeville for lunch at a resort restaurant with views over the Hanalei Bay below. Or return to Poʻipū for a final spa treatment and sunset from the Mahaʻulepu cliffs. Farewell dinner at your resort or at one of the intimate restaurants in Old Koloa Town.
IF BROWN WATER IS ACTIVE
Anini Beach often stays clear due to reef protection. If all ocean is off limits, book a private garden or farm tour in the Kilauea area ($50-100/person), visit the Kilauea Lighthouse, and end with a resort spa session before departure.
