Water quality status and bacteria risk rating
📍 Maʻalaea, Central Maui — near harbor & aquarium
Maʻalaea Beach sits in Central Maui near the harbor with generally acceptable water quality. The area benefits from wind-driven circulation, though the harbor proximity means some boat-related pollution potential. The beach is exposed to strong, persistent trade winds that funnel through the valley between West Maui and Haleakalā.
The strong winds are both a benefit (they help flush and circulate the water) and a challenge (they make the beach uncomfortable for swimming on many afternoons). The Maui Ocean Center aquarium is nearby, and the harbor is a departure point for whale watching and snorkel tours. Most visitors come for the harbor activities rather than the beach itself.
Based on: DOH beach monitoring, harbor proximity, strong wind-driven flushing, central isthmus location
The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Maʻalaea can receive runoff from the central valley agricultural areas after heavy storms. The strong winds help with flushing, but always check the water visually before entering.

Safe to Swim Hawaii is an independent passion project — it is not affiliated with the Hawaii Department of Health or any government agency. Water quality ratings on this site are estimates based on publicly available testing data and geographic analysis. They are not real-time measurements and may not reflect current conditions. “No DOH Alerts” means no advisory is currently posted — it does not mean the water was tested and found safe. DOH only monitors a fraction of Hawaii’s beaches, and some areas have no regular testing at all.
