Historical Bacteria Risk
⚠ Historical rating — based on long-term data, not current conditions.
Moderate-Low Risk 2 / 5

Mahaulepu Beach is on Kauaʻi's drier South Shore, which helps keep baseline bacteria levels lower than the wet North Shore. The area receives significantly less rainfall than Hanalei or Haʻena, and the remote location means minimal urban runoff.

The main water quality concern is the Kawailoa stream that drains into the central section of the beach. After the rare heavy rain events that do affect the South Shore, this stream can carry bacteria into the ocean. Gillin's Beach at the western end, away from the stream, has the best water quality of the three beach sections.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

Stay out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. While the South Shore is drier than North Kauaʻi, significant rain events do occur and can affect stream quality.

Beach Sections
Gillin's Beach (West)
Calmest section, sandy cove, best for swimming in calm conditions. No stream input — best water quality of the three sections.
Kawailoa Bay (Center)
Stream mouth here — higher bacteria risk after rain. Moderate waves. Good for walking and photography.
Haʻula Beach (East)
Most dramatic scenery with fossil dune cliffs. Roughest conditions — not suitable for swimming. Best for hiking and photography.
