⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Rain washes bacteria from cesspools, animal waste, and urban contamination into streams and the ocean. Check Safe to Swim Hawaii before every beach visit.

Molokini Crater is one of only three offshore volcanic calderas in the world that you can snorkel inside. The crescent shape blocks wind and waves from the south, creating a sheltered basin with crystal-clear water. Over 250 species of fish live in the crater. Most boat tours depart from Maʻalaea Harbor in central Maui and include a second snorkel stop at "Turtle Town" near Makena.

Molokaʻi is a completely different experience. Itʻs the most Hawaiian of the main islands, with strong indigenous culture and minimal tourist infrastructure. The island is known for the Kalaupapa Peninsula (accessible by mule ride, hiking, or small plane), the tallest sea cliffs in the world on the north coast, and Papohaku Beach (one of Hawaiʻiʻs longest white sand beaches) on the west end.
