Water quality at Kapalua Bay
Montage Kapalua Bay overlooks the protected crescent of Kapalua Bay, one of the calmest and cleanest swimming spots on Maui. The bay is sheltered by two rocky points that block most wave energy, creating a natural lagoon effect. There are no major stream outlets directly into the bay, and the area has limited development compared to Kaʻanapali. The rocky bottom supports excellent snorkeling. Water quality here is consistently good.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Bacteria and pollutants from runoff can linger in the water longer than the brown color does.
If the ocean near Montage Kapalua Bay turns brown or murky after rain, do not enter the water. Brown water carries bacteria, pollutants, and sediment from runoff.
