Montage Kapalua Bay Beach

Kapalua Bay water quality, swimming safety, and snorkeling at one of Maui's finest protected bays

Water Quality Risk Rating
Kapalua Bay LOW RISK — 1/5

Kapalua Bay sits on Maui's dry leeward northwest coast with minimal runoff and excellent water clarity year-round. The bay has earned Blue Wave certification from the Clean Beaches Council — one of very few Maui beaches with this distinction. Hawaii DOH test results are consistently excellent.

Blue Wave Beach: Kapalua Bay is one of Hawaii's few Blue Wave certified beaches, recognizing exceptional water quality, safety, and environmental protection.
Beach Overview

Kapalua Bay is a small, crescent-shaped bay on Maui's northwest coast, flanked by the Montage Kapalua Bay resort on the south and Napili-Honokowai district to the north. Two rocky lava points — Hawea Point and Kapalua Point — wrap around the bay, blocking the open ocean swells that pound other Maui beaches.

The result is remarkably calm, clear water that stays protected even when other Maui beaches are rough. The bay is shallow near shore and drops gradually — excellent for swimmers of all skill levels. The rocky fingers extending into the bay create world-class snorkeling.

Public access: Despite the luxury resort backdrop, Kapalua Bay is a public Hawaii beach. Public parking is available at the beach park. All visitors are welcome.

Snorkeling at Kapalua Bay

Kapalua Bay consistently ranks among Maui's top 3 snorkeling spots. The rocky lava points on both sides of the bay are covered in healthy coral and host an exceptional diversity of marine life:

🐢 Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (honu)

Frequently seen resting on rocks and grazing on algae. Keep 10+ feet distance.

🐟 Tropical reef fish

Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, parrotfish, surgeonfish, butterflyfish, Moorish idols.

🐙 Octopus & eels

Hawaiian day octopus and whitemouth moray eels hide in the reef crevices.

🐌 Spinner dolphins

Occasionally spotted just outside the bay. Admire from the beach — do not enter the water to approach them.

Best snorkeling is at both rocky points. Snorkel gear available for rent from the Montage beach attendants or at nearby shops in Kapalua.

🐢 Honu (Sea Turtle) Rules

Hawaiian green sea turtles are federally protected. Violations carry fines up to $100,000.

  • Maintain at least 10 feet (3 meters) distance at all times
  • Never touch, feed, or chase honu in the water
  • Do not block a turtle's path to the surface or shore
  • If a turtle rests on the beach — give wide berth, no photos within 10 feet
72-Hour Rain Rule

Kapalua and the northwest Maui coast receive much less rain than Maui's north or east coasts. However, if the West Maui Mountains have had significant rainfall in the past 72 hours, runoff can briefly affect water clarity. This is rare at Kapalua Bay. Wait 72 hours after any heavy rain to swim or snorkel.

Seasonal Conditions

Summer (May–Sep)

Calmest conditions. Light trade winds, minimal swell. Best snorkeling visibility. Peak season — arrive early for parking.

Winter (Oct–Apr)

North swells occasionally create surge at the rocky points. The inner bay remains calmer than exposed beaches. Check conditions before snorkeling.

Kapalua Bay is swimmable most days of the year due to its protected geometry. It is one of the few Maui beaches consistently calm in winter.
