Water quality status and bacteria risk rating for Kauapea Beach
📍 North Shore Kauaʻi, near Kilauea Lighthouse
Secret Beach (Kauapea Beach) has low bacteria risk thanks to its remote location, minimal development, and strong open-ocean flushing. There are no significant stream inputs or urban runoff sources feeding into the beach. The North Shore location means the beach receives clean open-ocean water.
The primary danger is the ocean itself, not bacteria. Strong rip currents and powerful shore break make swimming hazardous, especially during winter months. There are no lifeguards, and the steep access trail makes emergency response slow. Secret Beach is best enjoyed for its scenery, walking, and sunbathing rather than swimming.
Based on: Remote location, no development, open ocean exposure, no stream inputs, no regular DOH monitoring
The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Kauaʻi's North Shore receives heavy rainfall, and while Secret Beach has minimal direct runoff, the access trail becomes very slippery and dangerous after rain. Avoid the trail in wet conditions.
