Water quality at Waipouli Beach
The Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort is on Waipouli Beach on the east side (Coconut Coast) of Kauaʻi. This stretch of coastline receives moderate rainfall and has several streams emptying nearby. The beach can have strong currents and shore break. Water quality is moderate, with increased bacteria risk after rain from agricultural and residential runoff in the Wailua River watershed. The Coconut Coast gets more rain than the south shore, so post-rain water quality concerns are more frequent here.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Bacteria and pollutants from runoff can linger in the water longer than the brown color does.
If the ocean near Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach turns brown or murky after rain, do not enter the water. Brown water carries bacteria, pollutants, and sediment from runoff.
