Snorkeling Conditions at Electric Beach
Snorkeling Conditions 🤿
👁 Water Clarity

Good to excellent visibility, typically 25-50 feet. The warm water outfall from the nearby power plant attracts marine life and generally maintains clear conditions. Some particulate matter near the outfall pipe.

🦯 Reef & Marine Life

Electric Beach is famous for its marine life density due to the warm water discharge. Spinner dolphins, sea turtles, tropical fish, and occasionally manta rays visit the area. The reef is relatively healthy.

🦠 Bacteria Risk for Snorkelers

Lower bacteria risk than urban Oahu beaches. The leeward coast receives significantly less rainfall. The power plant outfall adds warm water but not bacteria. Still exercise caution after any rain event as land-based runoff can carry bacteria.

⏰ Best Time to Snorkel

Early morning for calmest conditions and best dolphin sightings. The warm water outfall is active year-round, providing consistent marine life viewing. Spinner dolphins are most common in morning hours.

If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. This applies to all ocean activities including snorkeling. Runoff carries bacteria from land into nearshore waters.
