Water quality, conditions, and what to know before you go
Haleiwa has consistent winter surf with several breaks (Haleiwa, Avalanche, Toilet Bowls). Summer is generally flat. The harbor provides a channel for paddling out. Good for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Moderate shore break during winter swells. The sand bottom makes entries easier than reef breaks. The harbor area provides calmer access points for paddling out.
Haleiwa Stream and harbor can carry bacteria and pollutants. Post-rain water quality is a significant concern. Boat fuel and harbor runoff add to the mix. Avoid surfing for 72+ hours after heavy rain.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. This applies to all ocean activities including surfing. Runoff carries bacteria from land into nearshore waters.
When conditions are clear, Haleiwa Beach has great options for surfing. Check the water quality above, then book with confidence.
