Water quality at Turtle Bay
Turtle Bay Resort sits on Oʻahu's North Shore at the far northeast tip of the island.
The resort's beach (Kuilima Cove) is a small, sheltered bay with calm water and no major stream inputs.
The North Shore is famous for massive winter surf, but Kuilima Cove is protected from that. Water quality here is
consistently good —Â no cesspools, no canal outflow, and minimal development runoff compared to Waikiki.
The main risk is brown water advisories during heavy storms. The North Shore gets hit hard during winter weather events
(there's one active right now from the Feb 23 storms). But these typically clear within a few days.
Based on: Remote North Shore location, no stream inputs, low development density, DOH monitoring
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain, even if the water looks clear. Bacteria and pollutants from runoff can linger in the water longer than the brown color does.

Safe to Swim Hawaii is an independent passion project — it is not affiliated with the Hawaii Department of Health, Turtle Bay Resort, or any government agency or hotel brand. Water quality ratings on this site are estimates based on publicly available testing data and geographic analysis. They are not real-time measurements and may not reflect current conditions. “No DOH Alerts” means no advisory is currently posted — it does not mean the water was tested and found safe. DOH only monitors a fraction of Hawaii’s beaches, and some areas have no regular testing at all.
