Moderate Risk 2 / 5

The Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa occupies one of Waikiki's prime locations at the far eastern end of the beach strip. This position, adjacent to Kuhio Beach Park and the Kapahulu Groin, gives the Marriott a slight water quality advantage over hotels farther west toward the Ala Wai Canal.

Like all Waikiki hotels, the primary water quality concern is the Ala Wai Canal. After heavy rain, bacteria from the canal can affect the entire Waikiki shoreline. On dry days, the eastern Waikiki stretch fronting the Marriott typically shows the best water clarity of the entire Waikiki Beach strip.

The Kapahulu Groin jetty creates a protected swimming pocket directly adjacent to the hotel, which the City and County of Honolulu staffs with lifeguards at Kuhio Beach Park. This makes the immediate swimming area safer and more family-friendly than unguarded stretches of Waikiki.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii DOH recommends at least 72 hours out of the water after heavy rain at all Waikiki hotels, including the Marriott. When bacteria and pollutants from the Ala Wai Canal spread along the shoreline after storms, even the eastern hotels are affected.
