Waipiʻo Valley Beach

Water quality status and bacteria risk rating

📍 Hamakua Coast, Big Island — Black sand beach

Checking live advisories…
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

Historical Bacteria Risk
⚠ Historical rating — this is based on long-term testing data, not current conditions. The state of Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories. Always check the water yourself and avoid brown or murky water.
Moderate-Low Risk 2 / 5

Waipiʻo Valley Beach has moderate-low bacteria risk overall, though the river mouth area has higher concern. The Waipiʻo River flows through the valley and agricultural land before reaching the ocean, which can carry elevated bacteria levels especially after rain.

The primary danger at Waipiʻo Valley Beach is dangerous ocean currents, not bacteria. Strong rip currents, powerful shore break, and a steep beach drop-off make swimming extremely hazardous. There are no lifeguards. The dramatic black sand beach is best enjoyed from shore. The steep 4WD access road is itself a significant hazard.

Based on: River mouth bacteria input, agricultural runoff, remote location, open ocean exposure, no DOH regular monitoring

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. The Hamakua Coast receives significant rainfall, and the Waipiʻo River can carry substantial runoff. Avoid the river mouth area entirely after rain. Always check the water visually before entering.
