Fairmont Orchid, Kohala Coast — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
The Fairmont Orchid is a luxury resort on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island, set within the Mauna Lani resort area on a stretch of coastline known for its ancient Hawaiian fishponds, petroglyph fields, and white sand beaches framed by black lava rock. The hotel fronts a small but beautiful beach with excellent snorkeling directly offshore.
The Kohala Coast's extreme dryness — under 10 inches of rain per year — makes it the most dependable beach region in Hawaii for clear skies and clean water. The absence of streams along this coast means bacteria levels stay consistently low. The cultural history of the area is remarkably well preserved, with walking trails connecting fishponds, petroglyphs, and anchialine ponds that contain native shrimp found nowhere else on Earth.
From the Fairmont Orchid, Hapuna Beach is about 5 minutes north on Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway (Hwy 19). Mauna Lani Beach is within the same resort area but requires a parking pass from the gate. A-Bay at Waikoloa is about 15 minutes south on the highway. Spencer Beach is roughly 10 minutes north near Kawaihae. All Kohala Coast beaches are on or just off the main highway.
Best overall: Hapuna Beach (5 minutes, wide sand, lifeguards). Best snorkeling: Fairmont Orchid beach (on property, turtles, reef). Most scenic: Mauna Lani Beach (turquoise water, lava rock, limited access). Best for families: Spencer Beach (calm, shaded, full facilities).
After heavy rain, bacteria levels spike at beaches near streams and river mouths. If a brown water advisory is active near Fairmont Orchid, Kohala Coast:
