Haiku, Maui — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
Haiku is a lush, upcountry community on Maui's north shore, surrounded by pineapple and sugarcane land that has largely been converted to small farms and residential lots. It sits inland at higher elevation than the coastal towns, which means getting to any beach requires driving downhill toward the coast.
The closest beaches are all along the north shore between Paʻia and Hoʻokipa, reachable in 10-20 minutes via Hana Highway (Hwy 36). Haiku is also the last town with full services before the Road to Hana begins, so if you are heading east you will want to stock up on supplies and fuel here.
From Haiku, you will drive downhill on Haiku Road to reach Hana Highway (Hwy 36), then head west toward Paʻia for Baldwin Beach and Baby Beach, or east toward Hoʻokipa. All four beaches are along this same stretch of coast, so you could visit multiple spots in one outing.
Parking at Hoʻokipa fills quickly by mid-morning, especially when surf and wind conditions are good. Baldwin Beach has a larger lot but fills on weekends. Baby Beach has very limited roadside parking in the Paʻia neighborhood.
Best for families: Baby Beach (protected cove). Best for watching surf and turtles: Hoʻokipa Beach. Best for a long walk: Baldwin Beach. Best for board sports: Kanaha Beach.
After heavy rain, bacteria levels spike at beaches near streams and river mouths. If a brown water advisory is active near Haiku, Maui:
