Beaches Near Haiku

Haiku, Maui — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Haiku, Maui. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Maui advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About Haiku

Haiku is a lush, upcountry community on Maui's north shore, surrounded by pineapple and sugarcane land that has largely been converted to small farms and residential lots. It sits inland at higher elevation than the coastal towns, which means getting to any beach requires driving downhill toward the coast.

The closest beaches are all along the north shore between Paʻia and Hoʻokipa, reachable in 10-20 minutes via Hana Highway (Hwy 36). Haiku is also the last town with full services before the Road to Hana begins, so if you are heading east you will want to stock up on supplies and fuel here.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Hoʻokipa Beach Moderate ●
World-class windsurfing and kiteboarding spot. Green sea turtles haul out on the sand at the eastern end in the late afternoon. Strong currents make it better for watching than swimming on most days.
10 min
North
Baldwin Beach Moderate ●
One of Maui's longest stretches of white sand. Popular with bodyboarders and local families on weekends. A reef at the western end offers modest snorkeling when conditions are flat.
15 min
West
Baby Beach (Paia) Low ●
A small, naturally protected cove with shin-deep water that stays calm even when nearby beaches have surf. The go-to spot for parents with toddlers on Maui's north shore.
15 min
West
Kanaha Beach Moderate ●
Maui's primary kiteboarding and windsurfing beach, located near Kahului Airport. Consistent trade winds make afternoons ideal for board sports. Morning hours are calmer for swimming and paddling.

Getting Around

From Haiku, you will drive downhill on Haiku Road to reach Hana Highway (Hwy 36), then head west toward Paʻia for Baldwin Beach and Baby Beach, or east toward Hoʻokipa. All four beaches are along this same stretch of coast, so you could visit multiple spots in one outing.

Parking at Hoʻokipa fills quickly by mid-morning, especially when surf and wind conditions are good. Baldwin Beach has a larger lot but fills on weekends. Baby Beach has very limited roadside parking in the Paʻia neighborhood.

Best for families: Baby Beach (protected cove). Best for watching surf and turtles: Hoʻokipa Beach. Best for a long walk: Baldwin Beach. Best for board sports: Kanaha Beach.
