Haleiwa, Oʻahu North Shore — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Haleiwa, Oʻahu North Shore. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Oʻahu advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About Halʻeiwa

Halʻeiwa is the historic surf town at the western gateway to Oʻahu's legendary North Shore. Shave ice shops, surf boutiques, art galleries, and plate-lunch counters line Kamehameha Highway through the center of town. The Anahulu River flows through Halʻeiwa into the harbor, creating the main water quality concern for the nearest beach. During winter months (November through February), the North Shore becomes the big-wave capital of the world, with professional surf contests running at Sunset, Pipeline, and Waimea. Summer brings calm, swimmable conditions to many of the same beaches. The contrast between seasons is dramatic and something every visitor should factor into their plans.

Waimea Bay Moderate ●
Waimea Bay transforms completely between seasons — a calm, lake-like swimming hole with a famous jump rock in summer, and a thundering 30-foot wave break in winter. The Waimea River can push bacteria levels up after rain, so check conditions. In summer, the bay is one of the most magical swimming spots on Oʻahu.

Shark's Cove Low ●
Shark's Cove is a rocky tide-pool area that becomes Oʻahu's best shore snorkeling from May through September. Underwater lava formations and clear water attract snorkelers and divers to explore the cove's channels and caves. Winter surf makes the area dangerous, so it is strictly a summer activity. The name is misleading — sharks are not common here.
15 min
East
Sunset Beach Low ●
Sunset Beach stretches for nearly two miles along the North Shore with wide golden sand. Winter brings massive surf and the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing competition draws thousands of spectators. During summer, the same beach becomes a mellow swimming and bodyboarding spot with small waves. Lifeguards are on duty at the main access point year-round.
15 min
East
Mokuleia Beach Moderate ●
Mokuleia Beach sits on the far western end of the North Shore, past Halʻeiwa near Dillingham Airfield where skydiving and glider rides launch. The beach is wide and empty compared to the more famous breaks east of town. No lifeguards, limited facilities, and strong currents require caution, but the solitude and mountain views reward the drive.

Getting Around

Halʻeiwa sits at the junction of Kamehameha Highway (Route 83) and Joseph P. Leong Highway (Route 99). All North Shore beaches are strung along Kamehameha Highway heading east toward Turtle Bay.

  • Rental car: Essential for North Shore beach-hopping — the drive from Waikīkī is about 45 minutes via H-2
  • TheBus Route 52: Runs from Ala Moana to the North Shore but takes about 90 minutes and runs only hourly
  • Parking: Roadside along Kamehameha Highway for most beaches — watch for no-parking signs and avoid blocking residential driveways
  • Tip: North Shore traffic peaks on weekend mornings when Honolulu residents head up for beach days — arrive before 9 AM or expect slow going through the Halʻeiwa roundabout
If Brown Water Is Active

After heavy rain, bacteria levels spike at beaches near streams and river mouths. If a brown water advisory is active near Haleiwa, Oʻahu North Shore:

  • Wait 72 hours after rain stops before entering the water
  • Avoid brown or murky water regardless of whether an advisory is posted
  • Best rain-resistant option: Laniakea (Turtle Beach) (East) — generally clearer after rain due to geography
  • Check the Oʻahu live advisories page for current conditions
