OʻAHU BEACH GUIDE · 2026

Best Beaches on Oʻahu

Ranked by water quality, bacteria risk, and swimming safety

Rankings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data, geography, and ocean circulation patterns. Always check current advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.
Oʻahu Beach Water Quality Tips
  • Windward side (Kailua, Lanikai, Waimanalo) generally has cleaner water than urban Honolulu
  • 72-hour rule: avoid all Waikiki and Ala Moana beaches for 72 hours after heavy rain
  • North Shore is only suitable for swimming in summer (May–Sep); dangerous in winter
  • Ko Olina lagoons are the most consistently calm and clean option on Oʻahu’s west side
  • Brown or murky water = stay out, regardless of whether an advisory is posted
