Hyatt Regency Maui, Kaʻanapali — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Hyatt Regency Maui, Kaʻanapali. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Maui advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About the Hyatt Regency Maui Area

The Hyatt Regency Maui sits at the southern end of the Kaʻānapali resort strip, directly on the three-mile stretch of golden sand that makes Kaʻānapali one of the most famous beach destinations in the world. The resort's location at the south end means it is closest to the quieter section of the beach, away from the crowds that tend to gather near Black Rock and Whaler's Village to the north.

Kaʻānapali Beach benefits from its position on Maui's dry, sunny west coast, where trade winds are blocked by the West Maui Mountains. The water is typically calm, warm, and clear, with a gentle sandy bottom that slopes gradually offshore. The beachfront walkway connecting all the Kaʻānapali resorts makes it easy to stroll to different sections of the beach without ever leaving the sand.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Kaʻanapali Beach Moderate ●
The wide, sun-drenched section of Kaʻānapali Beach directly fronting the Hyatt, with a gentle sandy bottom and calm water that is ideal for swimming and beginner surfing. This southern stretch sees fewer people than the more developed central section near Whaler's Village, and the sunset views over Lanaʻi and Molokaʻi are unobstructed

At the resort
The volcanic promontory known as Black Rock (Puʻu Kekaʻa) at the north end of Kaʻānapali Beach, where a daily sunset cliff-diving ceremony draws spectators. The underwater rock face on the north side of the point supports an abundance of reef fish, sea turtles, and healthy coral, making it the single best snorkeling site along the entire Kaʻānapali coast
10 min walk
North
A small, sheltered beach park in Napili, a quiet residential area just north of Kaʻānapali. The bay is shallow with a sandy bottom, and a protective reef keeps waves minimal, making it a favorite for families with young children. Sea turtles frequently surface in the bay, and the small-town atmosphere is a refreshing contrast to the resort strip
10 min
South
Napili Bay Low ●
A beautiful crescent-shaped bay in Kapalua where green sea turtles are spotted almost daily. The bay is partially sheltered by two lava headlands that keep the water calmer than the open coast, and the sandy bottom makes entry easy. Snorkeling along the rocky edges reveals reef fish and occasional octopus
15 min
North
Kapalua Bay Low ●
A protected bay at the Kapalua resort with consistently calm conditions and some of the best snorkeling on the west side of Maui. The outer reef protects the bay from larger swells, and the coral coverage supports a diverse fish population. The Kapalua Coastal Trail connects this bay to D.T. Fleming Beach for a scenic walk

Getting Around

The Kaʻānapali resort strip is compact and walkable — the entire three-mile beach can be covered on foot via the beachfront path. Black Rock is about a 15-minute walk north from the Hyatt. For Napili Bay and Kapalua Bay, drive north on Lower Honoapiilani Road, about 10 to 15 minutes. The resort also offers a free shuttle that runs between Kaʻānapali hotels and the Whaler's Village shopping area.

Best snorkeling: Black Rock at Kaʻānapali (reef fish, turtles, cliff diving). Best for families: Napili Bay (shallow, calm, turtles). Best for tranquility: Kapalua Bay (sheltered, less crowded). Most convenient: Kaʻānapali Beach at the Hyatt (on property, wide sand).
