About Kamuela (Waimea)
Kamuela is the postal name for Waimea, a ranching town perched at 2,670 feet on the slopes between Mauna Kea and the Kohala Mountains on Hawaiʻi Island. The town has a cooler, sometimes misty climate that feels nothing like the sunny coast 20 minutes downhill. Parker Ranch, one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States, dominates the surrounding landscape, and the town center has a growing food scene with farm-to-table restaurants supplied by nearby Waimea farms. The closest beaches are all down on the Kohala Coast, which sits in a reliable rain shadow and sees around 300 sunny days per year.
Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Regularly ranked among the top beaches in the country, Hapuna has a wide half-mile crescent of white sand that is rare on the Big Island. Bodysurfing and boogie boarding are popular here, though shore break can be powerful during winter swells. A state park with restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard tower sits at the south end of the beach.
20 min
South (Kohala Coast)
A reef-protected county park next to the historic Puʻukoholā Heiau, Spencer Beach is the go-to spot for families with small children on the Kohala Coast. The water is shallow and calm year-round, making it one of the gentlest ocean entries on the island. Pavilions, restrooms, and a grassy camping area make it easy to spend a full day here.
Kaunaʻoa Bay fronting the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is a stunning white-sand cove with clear turquoise water. Public access is available but the resort limits non-guest parking to a small number of passes issued each morning on a first-come basis. Arrive before 8 AM on weekends to have a chance at a spot — once passes are gone, you'll need to walk in from the highway.
Short for Anaehoʻomalu Bay, A-Bay is a sandy crescent fronting the Waikoloa Beach Marriott with ancient fishponds behind the shoreline. The water is generally calm and suitable for swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddling. It is also a reliable spot for sunset watching on the Kohala Coast, with Maui visible on the horizon on clear evenings.
Getting Around
Kamuela sits at the junction of Route 19 (Hawaii Belt Road) and Route 190 (Mamalahoa Highway). All beaches listed here are down the hill along the Kohala Coast, reached by driving south on Route 19 and turning off at the individual resort or beach access roads.
- Rental car: A must — the Kohala Coast has no practical public transit and beaches are spaced miles apart along the highway
- Elevation change: You'll drop from 2,670 feet to sea level in about 15 minutes, so morning fog in Waimea often gives way to blazing sun at the beach
- Parking: Hapuna State Beach has a large lot ($5 non-resident fee), while Spencer Beach park is free — both rarely fill except on holiday weekends
- Tip: Pack layers for the drive home — Waimea evening temperatures can dip into the low 60s, a sharp contrast to the 85-degree coast
