Beaches Near Kapaa

Kapaa, Kauaʻi — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Kapaa, Kauaʻi. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Kauaʻi advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About Kapaʻa

Kapaʻa is the main town on Kauaʻi's east shore, sometimes called the Coconut Coast. It sits along a four-mile stretch of Highway 56 with restaurants, shops, and bike-path access right along the coastline. Most vacation rentals and condos on this side of the island are within a few minutes of Kapaʻa town center.

Because Kapaʻa is roughly midway along Kauaʻi's accessible coastline, you can reach both the North Shore and the South Shore within about 30-45 minutes. The beaches listed below are the closest options, all reachable in 10 minutes or less along Kuhio Highway.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Lydgate Beach Low ●
Rock-walled ocean pool that blocks most open-ocean currents, making it one of the calmest swim spots on Kauaʻi. Playground and picnic pavilions adjacent — a top pick for families with small children.
10 min
South
Kealia Beach Low ●
A long, wide stretch of golden sand visible from the highway, popular with bodyboarders and bodysurfers. Shore break can be powerful, so wade carefully. Great spot to watch sunrise over the ocean.
5 min
North
Anahola Beach Moderate ●
Quiet, mostly local beach tucked in a bay with a river mouth at one end. The south end near the rocks tends to have calmer water, while the river side sees more runoff after storms. Significantly less crowded than other east-side beaches.
10 min
North
Donkey Beach Low ●
Reached via a short coastal trail from a parking area off the highway, this secluded crescent of sand rarely gets crowded. Strong currents make it better for sunbathing and beachcombing than swimming on most days.
10 min
North
Getting Around

All four beaches are along or just off Kuhio Highway (Hwy 56), the only main road running north-south on the east side. From Kapaʻa, Kealia Beach is the quickest stop — just a few minutes north — while Lydgate is the same distance south toward Wailua.

The Ke Ala Hele Makalae coastal bike path connects Kapaʻa town to both Kealia Beach and Lydgate Beach, making them easy to reach by bicycle without driving. The path is flat, paved, and about 4 miles in each direction.

Best for families: Lydgate Beach (protected pool). Best for body surfing: Kealia Beach. Best for solitude: Donkey Beach (short hike required). Best for a local vibe: Anahola Beach.
