Kapaa, Kauaʻi — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
Kapaʻa is the main town on Kauaʻi's east shore, sometimes called the Coconut Coast. It sits along a four-mile stretch of Highway 56 with restaurants, shops, and bike-path access right along the coastline. Most vacation rentals and condos on this side of the island are within a few minutes of Kapaʻa town center.
Because Kapaʻa is roughly midway along Kauaʻi's accessible coastline, you can reach both the North Shore and the South Shore within about 30-45 minutes. The beaches listed below are the closest options, all reachable in 10 minutes or less along Kuhio Highway.
All four beaches are along or just off Kuhio Highway (Hwy 56), the only main road running north-south on the east side. From Kapaʻa, Kealia Beach is the quickest stop — just a few minutes north — while Lydgate is the same distance south toward Wailua.
The Ke Ala Hele Makalae coastal bike path connects Kapaʻa town to both Kealia Beach and Lydgate Beach, making them easy to reach by bicycle without driving. The path is flat, paved, and about 4 miles in each direction.
Best for families: Lydgate Beach (protected pool). Best for body surfing: Kealia Beach. Best for solitude: Donkey Beach (short hike required). Best for a local vibe: Anahola Beach.
