About Kapalua

Kapalua is a luxury resort area at the northwestern tip of Maui's west side, past Kaʻanapali and Napili. It is anchored by the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua and surrounded by a championship golf course, hiking trails through native forest, and some of the best snorkeling on the island.

What makes Kapalua special for beach visitors is that several high-quality, reef-protected bays are clustered within a few minutes of each other. The area's rocky headlands create naturally sheltered coves, so you can often find calm water here even when other west Maui beaches have surf. The Kapalua Coastal Trail connects three of these bays on foot, making it easy to visit multiple beaches in a single morning without moving your car.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Kapalua Bay Low ●
A crescent cove sheltered by rocky headlands on both sides, keeping the water calm for snorkeling and swimming in most conditions. Consistently rated among Maui's top beaches. Limited parking fills early.
In town
Central
A wide, golden-sand beach with lifeguards, restrooms, and shaded picnic areas. More exposed than Kapalua Bay, so it gets more surf — check conditions before swimming. A former America's Best Beach winner.
5 min
North
Napili Bay Low ●
A small crescent bay popular for turtle sightings in the morning hours. The sandy bottom slopes gently, making it accessible for all ages. Several condo complexes line the shore, giving it a quieter, residential feel compared to Kaʻanapali.
5 min
South
Oneloa Bay Low ●
A secluded beach accessed via the Kapalua Coastal Trail. Fewer visitors than the other bays because of the walk in. Open ocean exposure means stronger surf, so it is better for experienced swimmers.
10 min
North
Kaʻanapali Beach Moderate ●
Three miles of resort-backed sand with Black Rock snorkeling at the north end and the cliff-diving ceremony at sunset. Busier than Kapalua's bays but more dining and services nearby.

South
