Kohala Coast, Big Island — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Kohala Coast, Big Island. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Big Island advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About the Kohala Coast

The Kohala Coast stretches along the Big Island's northwest shore from Kailua-Kona to Kawaihae, encompassing the most concentrated collection of luxury resorts and pristine beaches on the island. The coastline is carved from ancient lava flows that descended from Mauna Kea and Hualalai, creating a dramatic landscape of jet-black rock punctuated by white sand coves and turquoise water.

This is the driest coast in the Hawaiian Islands, receiving under 10 inches of rain per year, which makes it the most reliable beach destination in the state for guaranteed sunshine. The absence of streams and rivers means water quality is consistently excellent — Kohala Coast beaches regularly produce some of the lowest bacteria readings in Hawaii. Access to several beaches is limited through resort parking passes, so planning ahead is important.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Hapuna Beach Low ●
A stunning half-mile crescent of white sand that is consistently rated the best public beach on the Big Island. The wide, gently sloping beach faces west toward Maui and offers excellent conditions for swimming, bodyboarding, and boogie boarding. State park lifeguards are on duty daily, and the recreation area provides restrooms, showers, and a food concession. Arrive before 9 AM on weekends
Central
Kohala Coast
Mauna Kea Beach Low ●
A spectacular beach on Mauna Lani resort property where a limited number of public parking passes are distributed each morning at the resort gate. The small crescent of white sand sits against black lava rock with water so clear you can see the bottom 20 feet offshore. Ancient Hawaiian fishponds and petroglyph fields are a short walk from the beach
5 min
North of Hapuna
The beach at the Waikoloa resort area, where ancient Hawaiian fishponds line the shore and the sand extends along a bay with calm, protected water. Outrigger canoe rides, paddleboard rentals, and sunset catamaran cruises operate from the beach. The walking trail connecting the fishponds to nearby petroglyph fields adds cultural richness to any beach visit
15 min
South
Spencer Beach Low ●
A shaded beach near Kawaihae Harbor with reliably calm water thanks to a natural reef that blocks most swell. Large shade trees, covered pavilions, and a campground make it a popular weekend gathering spot for local families. The protected conditions mean this is one of the few Kohala beaches where swimming is reliable regardless of swell direction
10 min
North
Beach 69 Low ●
A beach known to locals by its Hawaiian name, tucked away from the main resort corridor and offering a more laid-back atmosphere than the better-known Kohala beaches. Shade trees along the shore provide relief from the intense Kohala sun, and the water is typically calm. Limited facilities keep crowds thin, making it a favorite for those who prefer solitude

Getting Around

The Kohala Coast is accessed via Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway (Hwy 19), which connects all resort and beach turnoffs. From the Kona airport, Hapuna Beach is about 25 minutes north. Each resort has its own access road branching off the highway. Public beach parking lots exist at Hapuna and Spencer Beach, while Mauna Lani Beach and some other resort-fronted beaches require obtaining parking passes at the resort gate. Early morning arrival is essential on weekends and holidays.

Best overall: Hapuna Beach (wide sand, lifeguards, excellent water). Best for calm swimming: Spencer Beach (reef-protected, shaded). Most scenic: Mauna Lani Beach (turquoise on black lava, limited access). Best cultural experience: A-Bay at Waikoloa (fishponds and petroglyphs).
