Beaches Near Lahaina

Lahaina, Maui — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Lahaina, Maui. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Maui advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About Lahaina

Lahaina is the historic former capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, sitting on Maui's sun-drenched west coast. The town was devastated by wildfires in August 2023, and recovery and rebuilding continue as of 2026. The adjacent coastline stretching north toward Kaʻanapali and Kapalua holds some of Maui's best-known resort beaches. West Maui's leeward position means less rainfall than the island's north or east shores, which translates to generally clearer ocean water and fewer brown water advisories. From Lahaina, a string of beaches runs north along the Honoapiilani Highway, each offering different conditions from gentle resort sand to world-class snorkeling coves.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Kaʻanapali Beach Moderate ●
Kaʻanapali Beach is a three-mile stretch of golden sand fronting a row of resort hotels, with Black Rock (Puʻu Kekaʻa) at the north end providing Maui's most accessible cliff-jumping and snorkeling spot. The beach walk connects all the resorts and makes for a pleasant stroll at any time of day. Moderate bacteria risk reflects periodic runoff from the Kaʻanapali drainage, though conditions are typically fine during dry weather.
5 min
North
Hanakaʻōʻō Beach (locally called Canoe Beach) sits at the boundary between Lahaina and Kaʻanapali, adjacent to the Hyatt and the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Outrigger canoe clubs launch from here in the mornings, and the beach has a grassy park area with shade trees. Water quality is moderate due to its proximity to Lahaina's urban drainage channels.
3 min
North edge of town
Baby Beach Lahaina is a shallow, reef-protected stretch of sand north of town where the water rarely exceeds waist-deep. Local families bring toddlers and young children here because the protected shelf eliminates wave action. With no significant stream runoff nearby, bacteria levels stay consistently low.
5 min
North of town
Napili Bay Low ●
Napili Bay is a small crescent-shaped cove flanked by low-rise condos, where Hawaiian green sea turtles regularly swim through the shallows. The bay is sheltered enough for snorkeling in calm conditions, though winter swells can bring strong surge. Water quality is reliably good thanks to the absence of stream outlets along this stretch of coast.
20 min
North
Kapalua Bay Low ●
Kapalua Bay is a protected cove at the north end of the west Maui resort corridor, regularly ranked among the best beaches in the country. Rocky points on either side block most of the swell, creating a natural pool ideal for snorkeling among coral and tropical fish. No streams feed into the bay, which keeps bacteria levels consistently low.

If Brown Water Is Active

After heavy rain, bacteria levels spike at beaches near streams and river mouths. If a brown water advisory is active near Lahaina, Maui:

  • Wait 72 hours after rain stops before entering the water
  • Avoid brown or murky water regardless of whether an advisory is posted
  • Best rain-resistant option: Baby Beach Lahaina (North of town) — generally clearer after rain due to geography
  • Check the Maui live advisories page for current conditions
