Beaches Near Lihue

Lihue, Kauaʻi — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Lihue, Kauaʻi. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Kauaʻi advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About Lihuʻe

Lihuʻe is Kauaʻi's county seat and the commercial center of the island. The airport, main shopping centers, and car rental agencies are all here, making it the first stop for most visitors. The town sits on the southeast coast with access to both the north and south shores within about 25-30 minutes.

Important note: while Kalapaki Beach right in town is convenient and scenic, it has among the highest bacteria levels of any monitored beach in the state due to its location in Nawiliwili Harbor near the cruise ship port and river mouth. Lydgate Beach — just 10 minutes south — is a far better option for water quality. If you are arriving at the airport and heading straight to a beach, Lydgate is the recommended first stop.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Kalapaki Beach Very High ●
In Nawiliwili Harbor next to the Marriott. Scenic with gentle waves good for beginner surfing, but DOH testing consistently shows very high bacteria levels from harbor runoff and the Nawiliwili Stream. Check current advisories carefully before entering the water.
5 min
In town
Lydgate Beach Low ●
Rock-walled ocean pools that stay calm regardless of surf conditions. Playground, picnic pavilions, and showers on site. The best water-quality option near Lihuʻe and strongly recommended over Kalapaki for swimming.
10 min
South
Poipu Beach Low ●
Kauaʻi's most popular beach with a protected wading area, monk seal sightings, and full resort amenities. On the sunny south shore, so weather is more reliable than the east side. Worth the 25-minute drive from Lihuʻe.
25 min
South
Anahola Beach Moderate ●
A quiet, uncrowded bay used mainly by local families. River mouth at one end means higher bacteria risk after rain. The south end near the rocks tends to have calmer, cleaner water.

North
Getting Around

From Lihuʻe, take Kuhio Highway (Hwy 56) north for Anahola and the North Shore, or south on Kaumualii Highway (Hwy 50) then Poipu Road for the south shore. Lydgate Beach is a quick south turn onto Leho Drive off Hwy 56. Traffic is generally light compared to Oʻahu.

Best water quality near town: Lydgate Beach (10 min, protected pools). Best all-around beach: Poipu Beach (25 min, sunny south shore). Most convenient (but worst water): Kalapaki Beach. Best for quiet: Anahola Beach.

If Brown Water Is Active

  • Wait 72 hours after rain stops before entering the water
  • Avoid brown or murky water regardless of whether an advisory is posted
  • Best rain-resistant option: Lydgate Beach (South) — generally clearer after rain due to geography
