Lihue, Kauaʻi — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
Lihuʻe is Kauaʻi's county seat and the commercial center of the island. The airport, main shopping centers, and car rental agencies are all here, making it the first stop for most visitors. The town sits on the southeast coast with access to both the north and south shores within about 25-30 minutes.
Important note: while Kalapaki Beach right in town is convenient and scenic, it has among the highest bacteria levels of any monitored beach in the state due to its location in Nawiliwili Harbor near the cruise ship port and river mouth. Lydgate Beach — just 10 minutes south — is a far better option for water quality. If you are arriving at the airport and heading straight to a beach, Lydgate is the recommended first stop.
From Lihuʻe, take Kuhio Highway (Hwy 56) north for Anahola and the North Shore, or south on Kaumualii Highway (Hwy 50) then Poipu Road for the south shore. Lydgate Beach is a quick south turn onto Leho Drive off Hwy 56. Traffic is generally light compared to Oʻahu.
Best water quality near town: Lydgate Beach (10 min, protected pools). Best all-around beach: Poipu Beach (25 min, sunny south shore). Most convenient (but worst water): Kalapaki Beach. Best for quiet: Anahola Beach.
After heavy rain, bacteria levels spike at beaches near streams and river mouths. If a brown water advisory is active near Lihue, Kauaʻi:
