Montage Kapalua Bay, Maui — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

About Kapalua

Kapalua sits at the northwestern tip of West Maui, where the road begins to wind along sea cliffs toward the rugged backside of the mountain. The Montage resort overlooks Kapalua Bay from a bluff surrounded by former pineapple fields that have given way to luxury residences and a championship golf course. This part of the coast has some of Maui's cleanest water thanks to its distance from major development and stream outlets. The sheltered bays here are also more protected from trade-wind chop than beaches farther south along the Kaʻanapali strip.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Kapalua Bay Low ●
A crescent-shaped cove framed by lava rock points that block most of the wind and swell, making it one of the calmest snorkeling spots on Maui year-round. Sea turtles cruise through regularly, and the coral along the rocky edges supports a healthy reef ecosystem. The small parking lot fills quickly — Montage guests have the advantage of walking down from the resort.
Walking
Below the resort
A wide, long beach with white sand and year-round lifeguards. D.T. Fleming was named America's Best Beach in 2006 and remains one of Maui's most spacious. The north end can have strong currents and shore break during winter, so swim near the lifeguard tower. Ironwood trees along the back of the beach provide natural shade.
5 min
North
Napili Bay Low ●
A small, picturesque crescent surrounded by low-rise condos and vacation rentals. Napili Bay draws sea turtles that graze on algae near the rocky edges, making it a reliable spot for turtle sightings. The bay is calm in summer and sees moderate surf in winter. No facilities on the beach itself, but restaurants and shops are steps away along Lower Honoapiilani Road.
5 min
South
Oneloa Bay Low ●
Also called Ironwoods Beach, Oneloa is reached by the Kapalua Coastal Trail and rarely gets crowded. The sandy beach is wider than nearby bays but more exposed to wind and swell. It is best for walking and beachcombing rather than swimming when surf is up. During calm summer conditions, the water is clear and inviting.
10 min walk
North
Kaʻanapali Beach Moderate ●
West Maui's busiest beach stretches three miles along the resort corridor, with the famous cliff-diving point at Black Rock (Puʻu Kekaʻa) offering some of the best shore snorkeling on the island. The beach walk connects resorts, restaurants, and shops. Water quality tests moderate due to higher visitor density and limited natural flushing near the hotel seawalls.

Getting Around

Kapalua is at the end of Lower Honoapiilani Road on West Maui. Beyond the resort, the road narrows into a scenic but winding one-lane path around the north tip of the island (not recommended for rental cars).

  • Walking: The Kapalua Coastal Trail connects Kapalua Bay, D.T. Fleming, and Oneloa — all walkable from the Montage without a car
  • Rental car: Needed for Kaʻanapali and anything south — the drive to Kaʻanapali is about 15 minutes along Honoapiilani Highway
  • Parking: The small Kapalua Bay public lot has about 20 spots and fills early — Fleming has a larger lot that rarely overflows
  • Tip: Afternoon trade winds can be strong in Kapalua — morning hours typically offer the calmest water for snorkeling
If Brown Water Is Active

  • Wait 72 hours after rain stops before entering the water
  • Avoid brown or murky water regardless of whether an advisory is posted
  • Best rain-resistant option: Napili Bay (South) — generally clearer after rain due to geography
