Timbers Kauaʻi at Hokuala, Lihue — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

About Timbers Kauaʻi at Hokuala

Timbers Kauaʻi is a luxury resort community on the Hokuala oceanfront bluff just south of Līhuʻe, Kauaʻi's main town and airport location. The property features an oceanfront golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus and private residences along the cliff above Nawiliwili Bay. Being close to Līhuʻe puts guests in a central position on the island, with reasonable drives to both the sunny South Shore (Poipu) and the lush East Side beaches. The nearest beaches around Nawiliwili Harbor have some of the highest bacteria counts on the island due to river runoff, so most resort guests drive a bit farther for better water quality.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Kalapaki Beach Very High ●
The closest beach to the resort, Kalapaki sits inside Nawiliwili Harbor fronting the Kauaʻi Marriott. The crescent bay has gentle waves good for bodyboarding and beginner surfing, but it consistently tests among the worst on Kauaʻi for bacteria due to the Huleia and Nawiliwili stream outlets that feed into the harbor. Check DOH advisories carefully before swimming here.
5 min
North
Lydgate Beach Low ●
Lydgate has two large rock-walled pools that protect swimmers from open-ocean currents, making it the most reliable family beach on Kauaʻi's east side. The larger pool allows snorkeling among fish that congregate around the rocks, while the smaller keiki pool is shallow enough for toddlers. A massive playground and paved bike path along the coast add to its family appeal.
10 min
South
Poipu Beach Low ●
Repeatedly voted among the best beaches in America, Poipu has a tombolo (natural sandbar) that creates a protected wading area on the left and open-ocean snorkeling on the right. Hawaiian monk seals frequently rest on the sand here, roped off by volunteers. The South Shore's dry, sunny weather means Poipu is often clear even when the rest of Kauaʻi is rainy.
25 min
South
Anahola Beach Moderate ●
A long, quiet beach on Hawaiian Home Lands north of Kapaʻa, Anahola draws a mix of local families and visitors who want a less touristy atmosphere. The south end near the river mouth has moderate bacteria risk, but the north end near the lifeguard tower generally tests cleaner. The dramatic Anahola Mountain backdrop makes for some of the most scenic beach views on the island.
