About Timbers Kauaʻi at Hokuala
Timbers Kauaʻi is a resort community on the Hokuala oceanfront bluff south of Līhuʻe, near the airport. The property has an oceanfront golf course and residences above Nawiliwili Bay. Guests can reach South Shore and East Side beaches by car. Past monitoring has found high bacteria levels around Nawiliwili Harbor; a longer drive does not establish better water quality today. Check each named current DOH notice above.
Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
The closest beach to the resort, Kalapaki sits inside Nawiliwili Harbor fronting the Kauaʻi Marriott. The crescent bay has gentle waves good for bodyboarding and beginner surfing, but it consistently tests among the worst on Kauaʻi for bacteria due to the Huleia and Nawiliwili stream outlets that feed into the harbor. Check DOH advisories carefully before swimming here.
Lydgate has two rock-walled pools, a playground, and a paved coastal path. The pools shelter against some open-ocean currents, but that protection does not establish current water quality. Check the DOH status above and posted signs before water entry.
Poipu has a tombolo with a sheltered wading area and nearby open-ocean snorkeling. Hawaiian monk seals often rest on the sand behind volunteer barriers. South Shore weather can differ from the East Side, but a sunnier day does not establish current water quality.
A quiet beach on Hawaiian Home Lands north of Kapaʻa, with a nearby river mouth and Anahola Mountain backdrop. Past differences between parts of the beach do not narrow the current named DOH advisory; check the notice above.
Getting Around
Timbers Kauaʻi is near Līhuʻe, which sits at the junction of Kaumualiʻi Highway (Route 50, heading south and west) and Kuhio Highway (Route 56, heading north). The airport is just minutes away, making car rental pickup convenient.
- Rental car: Essential on Kauaʻi — the island has minimal public transit and beaches are spread across different coasts
- To Poipu: Take Route 50 west to Route 520 (the Tree Tunnel) south — about 25 minutes and one of the most scenic drives on the island
- Parking: Poipu Beach lot fills by 10 AM on busy days — overflow parking along the residential streets requires a short walk
- Tip: Līhuʻe's central location means you can reach both Poipu and the North Shore beaches within 45 minutes, making it a practical base for exploring the whole island
If Brown Water Is Active
After heavy rain, bacteria levels spike at beaches near streams and river mouths. If a brown water advisory is active near Timbers Kauaʻi at Hokuala, Lihue:
- Wait 72 hours after rain stops before entering the water
- Avoid brown or murky water regardless of whether an advisory is posted
- Check each named location: Lydgate Beach has protected pools, but geography does not clear a current DOH advisory or visible runoff.
