Whaler's Village, Kaʻanapali, Maui — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
Whaler's Village is an open-air shopping and dining complex sitting directly on Kaʻānapali Beach, one of Maui's most famous stretches of sand. The mall occupies the center of the Kaʻānapali resort strip, making it a natural hub for beachgoers who want to combine shopping, dining, and ocean activities in one location.
The Kaʻānapali coast sits on Maui's dry, sunny west side, protected from trade winds by the West Maui Mountains. The water is typically warm, calm, and clear, with a gentle sandy bottom. Black Rock (Puʻu Kekaʻa), the volcanic promontory at the north end of Kaʻānapali Beach, is one of Maui's premier snorkeling sites and is walkable from the mall along the beachfront path.
From Whaler's Village, Kaʻānapali Beach extends in both directions along the beachfront path — Black Rock is a 10-minute walk north. For Kapalua Bay and Napili Bay, drive north on Lower Honoapiilani Road, about 10 to 15 minutes. The Kaʻānapali resort area has a free shuttle that connects the hotels and Whaler's Village. Parking at the mall is available but fills during peak hours.
Most convenient: Kaʻānapali Beach (steps from the mall). Best snorkeling: Black Rock (10-minute walk north, reef, turtles). Most sheltered: Kapalua Bay (calm, protected, sea turtles). Best for families: Napili Bay (shallow, quiet, turtle sightings).
