BIG ISLAND · SNORKELING GUIDE

Best Snorkeling on the Big Island

Top snorkel spots ranked by actual water quality data — not just scenery

The Big Island's Kona coast has some of the best snorkeling in all of Hawaii. The dry climate, volcanic rock coastline, and clear Pacific water create exceptional visibility and marine life diversity. Manta rays, spinner dolphins, sea turtles, and hundreds of reef fish species are regular sights.

Unlike Oahu's Waikiki or Maui's North Shore, the Kona coast rarely gets murky water because there are almost no streams to discharge runoff. This makes the Kohala Coast and South Kona consistently among the cleanest ocean water in the state.

⚠️ Always Check Before You Go

Even on the normally clean Kona coast, avoid snorkeling for 72 hours after heavy rain. Check for Big Island brown water advisories before entering the water anywhere.

Top Big Island Snorkel Spots — Ranked
#1 BEST OVERALL
Two-Step (Honaunau)
1 / 5 risk

Natural lava entry steps into 20+ feet of visibility. Turtles, spinner dolphins, eels, and hundreds of reef fish. One of the best shore snorkel spots in all of Hawaii. No sand — pure lava entry. Best in calm morning conditions.

#2 BEST BEACH SNORKEL
Kahaluʻu Beach (Kahaluu)
1 / 5 risk

Protected cove in Kailua-Kona with a shallow reef perfect for beginners. Green sea turtles are almost guaranteed. Protected from the open ocean, making it calmer than most spots. Best snorkel beach for first-timers on the Big Island.

#3 CLEAREST WATER
Kua Bay (Maniniowali)
1 / 5 risk

Crystal clear turquoise water on the Kohala Coast. Snorkel the rocky ends for fish and turtles. Sandy center for swimming. One of the most beautiful beaches on the island with excellent water quality year-round.

#4 BOAT REQUIRED
Kealakekua Bay
1 / 5 risk

Marine sanctuary at the Captain Cook Monument. Possibly the best snorkeling on the entire island but requires a kayak paddle or boat tour. Spinner dolphins and exceptional coral diversity. Visibility often exceeds 50 feet.

#5 KOHALA COAST
Hapuna Beach
1 / 5 risk

Snorkel the rocky southern end of Hapuna for reef fish and occasional turtles. The central sandy beach is better for swimming. Excellent baseline water quality and consistent clarity.

#6 NIGHT SNORKEL
Garden Eel Cove (Manta Ray Night)
1 / 5 risk

Near Kona Airport. Giant Pacific manta rays gather here at night to feed on plankton. One of the most magical wildlife experiences in Hawaii. Requires a guided tour — operators provide all equipment and flotation.
