For a Hawaii sunset, you need a west-facing beach with an unobstructed ocean horizon. East-facing beaches face away from the setting sun. This guide ranks the best sunset beaches on each island, with water quality ratings so you know whether it's also a good swimming spot.
Three miles of west-facing white sand with Molokaʻi on the horizon. Sunset is spectacular from anywhere along the beach. Water quality is consistently good (2/5 risk). Watch the Black Rock cliff dive ceremony at sunset near the Sheraton.
Wailea's crescent beaches face southwest, catching the sunset at an angle. The Four Seasons and Grand Wailea section of Wailea Beach is particularly beautiful at golden hour. Very low bacteria risk (1/5).
Napili Bay faces almost due west and has fewer crowds than Kaʻanapali. The small crescent bay creates a sheltered, peaceful sunset viewing experience. Very low bacteria risk.
Ko Olina's four lagoons face west with unobstructed ocean views. The calm water reflects the colors of sunset beautifully. Excellent for families — calm water to wade in while watching the sky change color. Very low bacteria risk (1/5).
At the end of the Waianae Coast road, Yokohama Bay is Oʻahu's most remote accessible beach. The sunset here is stunning with no development blocking the western horizon. Swim with caution — strong currents in winter.
Makaha is where Oʻahu locals go for west-side sunsets. Less touristy, authentic Hawaii experience. Water quality is generally good. Strong surf in winter.
Polihale is one of Hawaii's longest beaches (17 miles) at the end of a dirt road on Kauaʻi's west end. The Na Pali cliffs tower to the north as the sun drops into the Pacific. This is bucket-list sunset territory. 4WD recommended. Strong shorebreak — not for casual swimmers.
Salt Pond faces west and is one of Kauaʻi's most swimmable beaches. Protected by a reef, it's calm and family-friendly. The traditional salt pans adjacent to the beach are a unique cultural feature. Very low bacteria risk.
Hāpuna Beach faces west and has some of the Big Island's most beautiful sunset colors. The wide expanse of white sand and blue water turns golden at sunset. Water quality is excellent. Strong shorebreak in winter — check conditions.
Kua Bay's bright white sand against black lava creates a stunning sunset foreground. The bay faces northwest, catching late afternoon and sunset light beautifully. Very low bacteria risk (1/5). Limited parking — arrive early.
