China Walls

Water quality, safety warnings & cliff jumping risks

📍 Portlock, Hawaii Kai — East Oʻahu (no sandy beach — rocky lava)

People Have Died Cliff Jumping Here
China Walls has claimed multiple lives. Ocean surge can slam jumpers into the rocks without warning. Conditions can appear calm and turn lethal within seconds.
  • Never jump alone — always have someone watching from shore
  • Watch the water for at least 15 minutes before considering entry
  • Never jump if there is any surge, whitewater, or swell activity
  • Check for submerged rocks before jumping — water clarity can be deceptive
  • Have an exit plan — getting out of the water onto rocky lava is difficult in surge
  • There are no lifeguards and emergency response is slow to this location

Historical Bacteria Risk
⚠ Note: The bacteria risk here is low — but the physical danger is extreme. Water quality and swimming safety are entirely separate issues at China Walls.
Low Bacteria Risk 1 / 5

China Walls has low bacteria risk due to its open ocean exposure and strong flushing currents. There are no rivers, streams, or major runoff sources immediately adjacent. The water is generally clear and clean from a bacteria standpoint.

However, low bacteria risk does not mean safe to swim. The danger at China Walls is entirely physical — the rocky lava entry, cliff jumping, ocean surge, and powerful waves. These risks are present regardless of water quality.

Physical Danger Rating: EXTREME

Rocky lava entry, cliff jumping fatalities, surge waves, no lifeguards, slow emergency access.

Based on: Open ocean exposure, distance from runoff sources, DOH monitoring data

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. While China Walls has generally good flushing, nearby Hawaii Kai development can contribute runoff after heavy storms.
